I have always wanted to be a teacher. This is my 10th year of teaching. I started my teaching career at Cottonwood Elementary School teaching 3rd grade. I have been the Prairie Creek reading specialist since the building opened in 2009. Before I taught in the classroom, I worked with dyslexic students, helping them read, write, and spell. I graduated from WSU with my undergraduate degree in 1995 and completed my Master's degree as a Reading Specialist in 2013 from Emporia State. I love teaching students to read. It is my passion!
My family is my other passion. I have been married for 21 years and have 3 kids. My oldest 2 children graduated from Andover Central High and go to school at Oklahoma Christian University and Southern Nazarene University and my youngest daughter is a junior at ACHS. I spend my free time going to their basketball & soccer games, running, and of course reading!
I believe all students can learn to read. Some students need individual attention, multisensory instruction, specific phonics instruction, and more time. Kindergarten through 2nd grade we work on phonics and strategies that focus on learning to read. 3rd through 5th grade we transition from learning to read to reading to learn. We work on comprehension strategies, advanced phonics skills, and fluency.
